Colbie Caillat was born in Newbury Park, California, and grew up in Malibu, California. Her father, Ken Caillat, co-produced Fleetwood Mac's Rumours (1977) and Tusk (1979) albums. Producer Mikal Blue hired a teenaged Caillat to sing on background techno music to be used for fashion shows. Caillat began writing songs with Blue in 2004.
